A lighthearted and enjoyable series of mishaps unfolds at summer camp, featuring Bill Murray. Bill Murray, then aged 28 during filming, portrays a quirky and understated counselor at Camp North Star. He “trains” the counselors-in-training as they manage groups of children and deal with competitions against the more privileged Camp Mohawk. "Meatballs," released in 1979, provides a pleasant and gentle summer camp experience. It isn’t exceptional, but it's diverting enough; however, when seeking out summer camp films, I generally choose the Friday the 13th movies—virtually any of them—primarily because they have stronger female characters. Cindy Girling as the full-figured blonde Wendy is certainly the most appealing here, though Sarah Torgov as Candace isn’t bad either. Based on the license plates visible in the film, it seems likely that the camp is situated somewhere in upstate New York, but filming actually took place at Camp White Pine in Haliburton, Ontario, which is roughly 125 miles from the New York border. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 34 minutes. GRADE: B/B-
