It's disappointing when a director tries to do too much and doesn’t quite succeed. That’s what happened with writer-director Jérémy Clapin’s latest movie, which was intended as a serious exploration of grief and how people try to move past it when something unexpected happens. The story centers on the puzzling vanishing of astronaut Franck Martens (voiced by Sébastien Pouderoux) during what appeared to be a normal space mission, leaving his family behind, especially his younger sister, Elsa (Megan Northam). She deeply mourns her brother but is shocked one night when she suddenly finds that she can communicate with him in her mind. Just as they reconnect, he disappears again, except this time his voice has been replaced by an unknown alien being (Dimitri Doré), who says Franck can be brought back home, but at a cost – finding five human hosts and four other people to allow the entity and its companions to travel to Earth. Elsa is then faced with a difficult choice: How does she get her brother back while knowingly putting five innocent people through something like this? Who should she pick for such a thing? And is that kind of demand too steep a price? These are interesting questions, providing a good foundation for a thought-provoking story about right and wrong. Unfortunately, the way the story unfolds isn’t very well done. The filmmaker attempts to combine science fiction, horror, psychological drama and philosophical ideas into one movie, but it feels more like a series of rough ideas rather than even an early version of a complete script. What you get is a confusing blend of straightforward, symbolic, and metaphorical elements—including both animated and live-action sequences—that creates confusion instead of understanding. Maybe things could have improved with a longer running time to allow for better development and connection between the different parts, but at just 1:23:00, the movie feels hurried and like it was thrown together quickly, as if the filmmakers were trying to squeeze in everything they could before their money ran out. It’s unfortunate that this project didn't turn out the way it seemed intended to. However, right now, it’s more confusing than enlightening—a film that doesn't live up to its ambitious goals.
