Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) was raised in Africa by her parents, scientists, which one might have thought would prepare her for entering an American high school—a place where the social dynamics are just as fierce. She finds herself befriended by two outsiders, Janis (Lizzy Caplan) and her openly gay friend Damian (Daniel Franzese), who help navigate the various cliques at school. The group to steer clear of is the Plastics, a trio of shallow girls headed up by Regina (Rachel McAdams). When Cady’s invited to have lunch with them, they recognize an opportunity for some scheming! She ends up sitting behind the popular boy Aaron (Jonathan Bennett), who seems interested in her—but complicating matters, he used to date her new friend. Is he off-limits, or could Regina even assist in a romance? The stage is now set for a sharply funny examination of teenage life. There’s plenty of emotional turmoil, retaliation, a considerable amount of cattiness, and at one point it becomes difficult to want to save any of the characters from a disaster. Lohan and McAdams are excellent in their roles, and Tina Fey's adaptation of Rosalind Wiseman’s sarcastic book mocks nearly everyone—from the less popular kids to the athletes, the ditzy girls to the smart ones. There’s some reliance on stereotypes, but within this mix of personalities and abilities, they contribute to an amusing portrayal of a world where being liked is paramount, no matter how many people you have to hurt to achieve it. It's certainly over-the-top, but there's something genuine about the story that enhances its believability, and even a snippet of real Janis Ian ("At 17") for those who are listening closely. It’s simply enjoyable.
