If you’re interested in experiencing the Max Payne story, there are better ways to do so, like watching someone play through the games. The initial Max Payne installments—numbers 1, 2, and 3—are excellent; they were innovative for their time technologically, and also feature a compelling narrative alongside some moments where the game acknowledges its own existence. Adaptations of video games into film are seldom successful, though there are exceptions that merit acknowledgment. This one, however, doesn’t work at all. It strongly suggests those involved had only a superficial understanding of the original material, based on what amounts to a brief outline. Therefore, I'll conclude my assessment by echoing the movie's title: don't spend your time on this film. Steer clear of it.
