My expectations weren’t met with this film by Xavier Dolan. It's possible that juggling writing, editing, and acting took away his ability to view the movie critically, because it feels like an underdeveloped narrative. He plays "Max," a young man from Quebec who is planning to move to Australia. During a party with his friends from childhood, he and his attractive best friend Matt (Gabriel D'Almeida Freitas) find themselves participating in a video being made by one of their younger siblings. The scene involves them kissing – something neither had experienced as adults with another man. What follows is an intentionally paced exploration of the difficulties that this kiss creates for their connection. "Matt" has a girlfriend, so his attempts to reconcile with his feelings for his friend unfold differently than those of “Max,” who struggles with his mother’s addiction recovery. Unfortunately, many of these consequences are simply told to us by the director rather than shown on screen. It doesn't need to be a predictable romance or overtly sexual, but we have to guess that they want each other because the film tells us so—not because we see any real sense of attraction. In fact, the others in their circle seem more comfortable flirting and joking around than the two main characters do. The movie lacks a clear start, progression, and resolution; it's simply a middle section. It’s skillfully filmed and constructed, but just a middle nonetheless. I would still recommend seeing it—I believe Dolan has potential—but I hoped for more depth from the characters and the storyline. As is, I felt like an unfulfilled viewer.
