Mariama Diallo’s *Master* presents one of the most deliberate, perceptive, and stimulating Black narratives at the festival. This directorial first effort features an absorbing storyline that incorporates significant social observations about racism and white supremacy, cleverly masked by a frightening supernatural presence enhanced by a striking musical score and unsettling visuals. Regina Hall gives a noteworthy performance, as does Zoe Renee, though Hall particularly stands out in her central role. More depth could have been given to Amber Gray’s character, along with certain other ideas explored within the film, which causes some distraction roughly halfway through. Still, the thoughtfully crafted screenplay provides an illuminating perspective, enabling audiences to experience the prejudice faced by the principal characters without it feeling contrived or directly woven into the plot. The concluding moments, set against the backdrop of the end credits, serve as a fitting way to highlight the variations in cultural attitudes and behaviors between different racial groups.
