A rich woman living in the Hamptons—played by Meg Tilly—finds herself drawn to a charismatic yacht captain, Rob Lowe, but her family’s money attracts unwanted attention. John Glover portrays her unpleasant stepfather, and Doug Savant appears as an old friend who is also a local police officer. "Masquerade," released in 1988, attempts to blend romance with crime elements, showcasing attractive Long Island scenery and sailing scenes. It failed at the box office due largely to studio mismanagement and reports that the president’s wife disliked its romantic content, which reportedly impacted Lowe's career for a time. Besides Tilly, the cast includes Kim Cattrall as the yacht owner’s unfaithful spouse and Dana Delany in the role of the stepfather’s girlfriend. The film contains several R-rated sexual encounters and associated nudity. There is a positive theme about love’s ability to help someone overcome corruption. However, the pervasive deceit makes it difficult to connect with many of the characters. It's almost funny how oblivious the heiress seems while those around her are scheming. A dose of realism and fewer contrived plot devices would have improved the movie. Nevertheless, if any of this sounds appealing, it might be worth watching. The film’s length is 1 hour and 31 minutes; filming took place on Long Island—specifically in Riverhead, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island, Southampton Village, and Broadview—with some additional scenes shot in Manhattan.
