I realize now that I hadn’t really seen this film from beginning to end previously, but viewing it was definitely worthwhile. "Jane" (Karen Dotrice) and her brother "Michael" (Matthew Garber) are rapidly dismissing their succession of nannies with a zeal reminiscent of the Von Trapp family when their father, "George" (David Tomlinson), resolves to take over nanny selection from his suffragette wife, "Winnifred" (Glynis Johns), hoping for a more lasting arrangement. They draft an advertisement intended for "The Times." Simultaneously, the children devise their own, considerably lighterhearted plan. The parents listen with courtesy before, in a rather literal fashion, the ad disappears up the chimney and into the hands of our titular nanny (Julie Andrews). She arrives promptly and quickly wins over nearly everyone. What follows is a gently humorous sequence of incidents as the children encounter a friendly chimneysweep "Bert" (Dick Van Dyke), the man who can’t stop laughing, "Uncle Albert" (Ed Wynn), the woman who provides sustenance for the birds (Jane Darwell), all while being overseen by the fastidious “Admiral Boom” (Reginald Owen) – his eight o'clock gun will have a more significant impact than just clearing the air. The Sherman brothers contribute some catchy tunes and lovely songs performed by the visible cast, frequently enhanced with enchanting visual effects or group dances, which help to communicate a narrative about love, generosity, and warmth, of inquisitiveness and, ultimately, I felt, about maintaining a sense of balance. About understanding what’s truly important. The animated sequence at the zoo might be slightly extended, but for the most part this 2¼ hour production is consistently enjoyable, with Andrews and Van Dyke developing an undeniable rapport; a notably strong supporting ensemble – especially Johns - and a story that shines through its straightforwardness.
