DanDare on Mary Poppins

4/10 · Mar 4, 2017

Jane and Michael Banks are two youngsters living in Edwardian London, within a fairly typical middle-class neighborhood. Their parents aren't particularly involved with them, and every nanny they hire quits due to the children’s disruptive behavior. The children’s father works as a banker and seems emotionally detached from his family, while their mother is occupied with her activism in the suffragette movement. They are searching for an ideal caregiver, and unexpectedly, Mary Poppins arrives, seemingly blown in by the wind. She has extraordinary abilities, including a handbag that appears to hold an endless supply of items. Mary Poppins significantly alters the children's lives and also encounters Bert, a street performer who plays multiple instruments, whom she knows. Mary Poppins blends live-action footage with Disney’s animation style, along with some songs that stick in your head, and features Dick Van Dyke delivering a distinctive cockney accent. While the film is considered to be one of Disney's most beloved movies, I didn't think the animation was particularly impressive, the movie felt too lengthy, and it wasn’t consistently funny.
