I found myself appreciating this film in much the same way I appreciate the initial Mary Poppins. It seems to me that creating sequels for well-regarded movies is frequently an unrewarding endeavor; Christopher Robin and Hook faced considerable negativity from fans of their respective predecessors. Remakes often meet with similar disapproval, which might be justified. The creative team behind Mary Poppins Returns didn’t attempt a radical reimagining, but rather aimed to amuse by employing some creativity to present the familiar story to a more contemporary viewership. There's no need for us to discard what we cherish. I doubt I will revisit this new version as frequently as I have the original, but it proved entertaining without resorting to vulgarity, profanity, or brutality—a fairly uncommon occurrence.
