Marty (Timothée Chalamet) has aspirations of excelling in table tennis. It seems like most people around him in New York believe he's not quite all there. Following a rather amusing disagreement with someone at work, he takes seven hundred dollars and leaves for London to compete in the world championships. There, he encounters both his future rival, Koto Endo (Koto Kawaguchi), and the actress Kay (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is unfortunately tied to millionaire Rockwell (Kevin O’Leary). From this point on, Marty has to deal with several issues, including Rachel (Odessa A’zion), who is expecting a baby, and an international federation that disapproves of his behavior regarding their sport and its rules. The next world championships are in Japan, and he might have a shot at getting there if he follows Rockwell's instructions – but considering how self-centered and generally unpleasant he is, what possibility does he have of learning to cooperate? I’ve been slow to appreciate Chalamet’s talent; before “Dune” (2021), I thought he was rather ordinary. However, here, he’s excellent. He completely embodies the role, and I must say I really enjoyed watching him as a man who I would happily throw to sharks. The scene that this film will probably be most known for didn't quite go far enough with a character whose arrogance reached new heights. A’zion becomes more prominent later in the movie, but Paltrow doesn't have much opportunity to stand out, because her brief appearances don’t really make “Kay” likeable. My dad once painted his golf balls orange so he could play in the snow in Scotland; therefore, the idea of an orange ping pong ball against a white background seems perfectly logical for everyone involved. Some of his energetic moments are amusing as the film moves quickly, and while I wouldn’t wait in line to see it again, I did enjoy it because Chalamet has a charisma that is pleasant to watch.
