The movie manages to balance being an engaging and alluring film with its exploration of significant problems involving sexual abuse—not always perpetrated by clergy members themselves, but certainly occurring under their authority during Franco’s reign in Spain. The plot focuses on a young actor named "Angel" (played by Gael Garciá Bernal), who unexpectedly appears at the home of his former classmate, “Enrique” (Fele Martinez). Enrique has achieved success as a film director, and Angel seemingly hopes that a manuscript he carries might be his chance to make it. It’s revealed that these two men haven't seen each other in sixteen years, and the manuscript is partly based on real events—it recalls their childhood experiences at a Catholic school overseen by "Fr. Manolo" (Daniel Giménez Cacho, where they experienced sexual encounters with one another and others, ranging in consent. The story deals with difficult themes, but also incorporates humor and intimate scenes as it progresses. Viewers are intentionally left to decide how reliable "Angel’s" account is—whether he's being honest, imaginative, or simply overly eager—and the film presents a distinctive perspective on retribution. The storyline is intricate; shifts in timelines and characters create a challenging and stimulating experience for the audience. It's definitely worth seeing.
