This movie’s reliance on black humor makes it a challenging watch for many. Because very few people appreciate black humor, this film, which is saturated with it from start to finish, suffered the consequences and became something of a disappointment. I think that even now, it's one of the less celebrated films in Tim Burton’s career, especially considering he’s directed movies that were much worse. The story unfolds in the 90s and depicts a hostile Martian invasion of Earth. The US government is understandably on edge; there are soldiers sexually stimulated by the prospect of using nuclear weapons against the Martians, scientists who firmly believe that the invaders' technological advancement proves their good intentions, and politicians concerned about reelection. Predictably, when conflict arises, the visitors gain the upper hand. It’s noticeable that other countries seem to have vanished from the map, with France only mentioned briefly to illustrate the widespread devastation. The film’s strongest point is likely its impressive cast, comprised of talented actors eager to work with Burton. Jack Nicholson delivers a memorable performance as the president and does an admirable job, supported by Glenn Close and a young Natalie Portman. Lisa Marie has a striking role that requires no dialogue, while Danny DeVito seems to be reprising familiar characters, although he admittedly wasn't given much material to work with. Tom Jones also makes a noteworthy appearance. Pierce Brosnan appears to be enjoying himself while playfully mocking his own image. Sarah Jessica Parker, Annette Bening, Martin Short, Michael J. Fox, Rod Steiger, and Jack Black all contribute as well. Furthermore, the film is a broad satire of 50s and 60s sci-fi movies that frequently featured Martian invaders. The visuals are vibrant and playful, creating a lighthearted atmosphere. It’s clear that the filmmakers aren't striving for seriousness, which generally works out fine, particularly for those who appreciate dark humor.
