Owen Wilson needs to watch out; he might end up being the preferred choice for older Latina women. He previously helped salvage Bliss from Salma Hayek's overly forceful performance, but he doesn’t have that kind of luck in Marry Me. To be fair, Jennifer Lopez isn’t entirely at fault for how the film turns out, and she does a better job than Hayek did; it also helps that she essentially plays herself – a hugely popular singer with a history of failed marriages. While she's not an exceptional actress, neither is Maluma, who portrays her temporary fiancé, but they are both performers who know how to work a stage and feel at ease in front of cameras. It’s no shock then that the few authentic moments in Marry Me happen during a sold-out concert – at least until Kat Valdez (Lopez), after discovering just before their wedding between musical numbers that Bastian (Maluma) has been unfaithful, experiences what can only be described as a mental breakdown and impulsively chooses a random person from the audience to marry on the spot. To put it plainly, this storyline is too far-fetched even for Wilson, who’s appeared in several Wes Anderson films. The reason Charlie (Wilson) is at the concert is fairly arbitrary; Parker (Sarah Silverman), his friend and coworker – they are both teachers, or at least he's a math teacher with just a few students, while she mostly seems to hang around the school –, intended to go to the show with her girlfriend. However, her girlfriend ended their relationship, so she asked Charlie to come along and take her daughter. Now, this is supposedly the most popular event in town – sold out, as I mentioned earlier –, but Parker just so happens to have an extra ticket; even more unbelievable is that her girlfriend didn't wait until after the concert to break up with her. Anyway, later that same night Kat becomes fodder for Jimmy Fallon’s jokes on The Tonight Show – which is obviously impossible because The Tonight Show isn’t broadcast live; it’s actually recorded in the afternoon and shown hours afterward. But who knows? Perhaps Jimmy has some kind of psychic ability and, anticipating what happened, pre-recorded a few relevant jokes. All things considered, you know your movie is really struggling when it makes less sense than Notting Hill.
