Despite what many assert, this proves to be a genuinely strong murder mystery and private investigator narrative in the classic mold. The execution feels appropriate for a story centered around Philip Marlowe. This type of tale shouldn’t involve excessive action sequences, displays of extreme violence, or any of the other elements that Hollywood—and perhaps younger viewers—seem to believe every film requires. Does it move at a measured pace, as some suggest? Certainly, if held up against something like John Wick, it does feel slow. However, for a Philip Marlowe movie, the tempo is perfectly suitable. I was genuinely pleased while watching that this wasn’t another instance of Hollywood attempting to “modernize” a character, resulting in remakes where Hercule Poirot leaps across train cars and pursues criminals with firearms. It's a solid mystery story, competently realized. Liam Neeson, an actor I typically appreciate, seems well-suited for the part of Philip Marlowe. I found myself quite enjoying this film. The fact that those self-proclaimed “critics” at Woke (Rotten) Tomatoes awarded this movie only 25% positive ratings simply confirms how little credibility these politically driven reviewers possess. Any film failing to promote their preferred viewpoints is automatically deemed unfavorable in their eyes.
