Following Eric’s departure from his risk analysis position on Wall Street, Sullivan, his replacement, discovers that the company faces a potentially devastating situation threatening everyone's employment. He informs Will, his supervisor, who then shares the information with Sam. Sam promptly alerts Cohen, and soon a helicopter arrives carrying chairman Tuld, who quickly calls an emergency meeting in the middle of the night to consider their choices. What follows is a skillfully directed portrayal of greed and self-interest that's quite captivating. Irons delivers a performance exceeding his typical standard; his scheme to essentially transfer their liabilities to clients, presenting it as a beneficial deal, almost seemed logical. Spacey portrays his conflicted colleague effectively, demonstrating at least some moral principles. Penn Badgley also provides an interesting depiction of Seth, a young man whose aspirations for wealth and success are about to be abruptly halted. Unfortunately, Quinto’s acting seems limited; he relies on a single expression—a kind of puzzled look—which is disappointing given the importance of his character to the unfolding narrative. The film lacks a traditional beginning or ending but provides an insightful view of how certain individuals can mask dishonesty and still manage to emerge unscathed. It's a more nuanced and unsettling depiction of the origins of the 2008 financial crisis, illustrating how some people—even at the last minute—thought they could control it for their own benefit, making it definitely worth seeing.
