I can’t say I enjoy the thought of a trip to the dentist, and this movie only makes the core concept even more unpleasant. The story revolves around "Babe" (Dustin Hoffman), an everyday student who becomes deeply troubled when his older brother is murdered in a violent way. His investigation leads him into a scheme involving Nazi hunters pursuing “Szell” (Sir Laurence Olivier). Szell, meanwhile, is attempting to evade government agents while searching for a large collection of diamonds. It seems the villain believed the deceased brother knew where the gems were hidden, which naturally places "Babe" in significant danger and soon on a list for questioning. The depiction of this torture gives a whole new meaning to the idea of dental work; the sound of the drilling is more than enough to make up for what isn’t shown visually. While I thought the resolution was somewhat neat, Hoffman delivers an excellent performance, as does Sir Laurence, and the international cast contributes to the unsettling nature of the story. Even with today's familiarity with onscreen violence, this remains strikingly gruesome and impactful.
