There's a certain beauty when you consider what this film is trying to do. Mannequin seems destined to be either a fondly remembered, gentle trip down memory lane—or an example of shallow filmmaking that highlights the less appealing aspects of 1980s American movies. Among the many teen comedies and "Brat Pack" films released during that decade, Mannequin is one of those titles that inspires strong reactions; people tend to either embrace it completely or reject it entirely. So, how does one even approach reviewing something like this? If you've already seen it and are reading what I have to say, then there’s really no need for my input—you’ve likely already formed an opinion. But if you haven't checked it out yet and are curious about movies from the 1980s of this type, it might be worth a look. It isn’t offensively bad, though those who enjoy Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy may find it worthwhile just to see them navigate these underdeveloped characters. The movie is lighthearted and upbeat, but lacking in depth; one-dimensional characters and James Spader's weakest performance don't exactly improve things now. The soundtrack is reasonably good, featuring Starship’s power pop ballad Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, while the costumes are strikingly representative of the era. It shouldn’t be taken too seriously, and it certainly has its problems, but it does have a following. Maybe you'll become one of them? Or perhaps you’d rather poke yourself in the eyes? It’s a gamble, really—give it a shot. 5/10
