I approached this remake without any prior knowledge of the original movie, so I had no preconceived notions going in. This version of Maniac turned out to be a surprisingly effective thriller, even though it’s unsettling at times. What seems to bother some horror enthusiasts is its unique presentation; the first-person perspective and experimental touches diminish what could have been genuine tension. However, that also makes it commendable, as does Elijah Wood's casting in the role of the central figure. The plot isn't particularly inventive—it centers around a man grappling with significant issues related to his mother and who has experienced a troubled upbringing. He’s built a career crafting mannequins, but using real human hair! This leads to a violent series of scalping incidents – although then a beautiful photographer enters the picture and befriends him... Ultimately, it's a film with a predictable storyline, though it boasts impressive cityscapes and a bold point-of-view style. It’s an unusual combination, so naturally, these elements have to appeal to you for the experience to be worthwhile. I give it 7/10.
