My memory of Kerwin Matthews goes back to his portrayal of “Sinbad” in 1958. He was pleasant-looking, certainly, but not known for his range as an actor. This is unfortunate because the plot’s potential could have been realized with a more suitable performer. Instead, he plays "Jeff," a wanderer who becomes enamored with "Annette" (Liliane Brousse) in a quiet French village. Annette's stepmother, "Eve" (Nadia Grey), seems to develop an interest in him and uses her charm to persuade this rather naive man to assist her in freeing her husband from the local institution where he was confined following a particularly brutal killing. However, "Jeff" is unaware of "Eve’s" true intentions, and “Henri's” (Donald Houston) appearance increases the risk for "Annette." Will he, along with the local police officer "Etienne" (George Pastell), be able to stop the dangerous scheme before it progresses too far? Matthews isn't the only weak link in this uninspired cast. Houston doesn’t convey any sense of threat, and neither actress possesses that certain something—that Jeanne Moreau quality—which might have benefitted the character of "Eve." The film runs for ninety minutes, but it felt longer, and the conclusion was also somewhat underwhelming. It's acceptable to watch, but don't anticipate anything extraordinary.
