Now that “Hannibal Lecktor” (Brian Cox) is securely incarcerated, the damaged profiler “Graham” (William Petersen) may have envisioned an overdue period of rest. However, the "Tooth Fairy" has different intentions, initiating a series of killings marked by the brutal deaths of entire families within their homes during full moon nights. These events prompt his former FBI superior, “Crawford” (Dennis Farina), to request his assistance. As these murders unfold, they are genuinely disturbing. To attempt to identify potential patterns and prevent further bloodshed, “Graham” must once again rely on the reluctant guidance of a previous adversary – a collaboration that is never simple. Simultaneously, "Dollarhyde" (Tom Noonan) appears; he’s an imposing figure who seems far from stable, given his profession as a photographer. It's conceivable that he could find some solace in the gentle nature of the visually impaired “Reba” (Joan Allen), but with mounting strain, placing faith in that possibility would be risky. Is there a link between these events? Similar to Thomas Harris’s "Red Dragon" novel, the audience possesses more information than the investigators do, which proves effective as we observe “Graham's” efforts to decipher clues and pursue a man who has seemingly left behind almost no trace. Petersen maintains control of the narrative effectively, and Cox, with his consistently commanding presence, projects an actor fully prepared to outshine everyone else. I felt the conclusion was somewhat hasty, but the pieces fit together well, and the sense of danger steadily intensifies throughout this unsettling film adaptation. The synthesized soundtrack proved a bit distracting – it evoked too much of “Miami Vice” for my taste – but overall, this is a strong and frequently suspenseful account of instability and madness that I appreciated.
