The baffling decisions about who was in it and how Maneater was put together really contributed to its confusing and unpleasant nature; there are better options out there when it comes to shark stories. Despite being released as a streaming film, Maneater felt like something straight out of 1990s television. The performances, the music, the editing, and the computer-generated imagery were all terrible. What stood out most was the casting; the people who ended up as victims of the shark seemed meant to be young college students. Dialogue mentioning recently finishing school and referring to one of them as “kid” made it clear what age they should have been, but everyone appeared to be in their late thirties or early forties. Checking online confirmed that this is actually how old the actors were! It’s hard to understand why someone would cast performers so much older than the characters they're portraying; it just made everything seem more unbelievable and badly executed. So far, 2022 hasn't been a strong year for shark movies.
