Quentin Dupieux’s films have consistently been odd, resisting easy classification as anything other than peculiar. His body of work appears to have reached a peak with Deerskin, which stands out as his funniest and most easily understood movie so far. However, Mandibles feels like a step back in terms of what he usually delivers. A large fly is present, but the film doesn’t showcase her enough while focusing on two foolish individuals attempting to avoid responsibility. The attempts at comedy don't quite land, and it proves difficult to connect with or discover anything amusing about any of the people involved. Mandibles will likely only appeal to those who are already dedicated followers of Dupieux’s previous films. A female house fly typically lives for 25 days, which is roughly three weeks longer than Mandibles will remain in the public consciousness.
