This is a solid Western featuring Robert Mitchum, presented in black and white. A hired gun (Robert Mitchum) arrives in an Old West town and takes on the job of keeping order. Henry Hull portrays the older, deliberate marshal, with John Lupton and Emile Meyer appearing as residents. Leo Gordon and Claude Akins are present as antagonists. "Man with the Gun," released in 1955, proves to be a worthwhile Western anchored by Mitchum’s quiet, morally upright gunslinger. The storyline is familiar territory, but the ensemble cast, the script, the acting, and the realistic depiction of the town itself all contribute to its appeal. The female performers are also noteworthy, including Jan Sterling (as Nelly), Barbara Lawrence (Ann), Karen Sharpe (Stella), and Angie Dickinson (Kitty)—each one striking in appearance. My only reservation is that it’s filmed without color; however, I didn't find this to be a distraction. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 24 minutes and was filmed at Samuel Goldwyn Studios in West Hollywood, California. GRADE: B+
