Robert Mitchum appears in *Man With The Gun*. Clint Tollinger comes to a small town searching for his estranged wife and information about his daughter, though he locates her, any chance of getting back together seems unlikely. While there, the sheriff and influential residents discover Tollinger’s reputation as someone skilled with a gun who can bring order to towns. Because they are living in fear of a mysterious landowner who is gradually taking everything from them, they hold a meeting and decide to hire Tollinger to eliminate the town's undesirable elements. *Man With The Gun* appears to be either obscure or overlooked, as I’m writing this it has just over 200 votes and only 9 user comments on IMDb. That's unfortunate because even though the production values suggest a “B” movie Western, it's a good addition to the genre. The fact that the story follows a familiar plot—a distressed town turning to an avenger—probably hasn’t helped the film over time; I myself read the summary and thought it was just another one of many similar movies. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this dark and dramatic film with several enjoyable moments, both in its technical aspects and as a story. Robert Mitchum leads the cast as Tollinger, and he’s perfectly suited for the part; he moves through the movie like a brooding threat. We often discuss the screen presence of John Wayne and Charlton Heston (and rightly so), but Mitchum is just as good. There's one scene where he stands in the shadows at the back of a room during a meeting, and we don’t see his face, yet you can feel that intense gaze directed outward! The other actors are overshadowed by Mitchum, so the film’s acting quality really rests on his shoulders. It might be unfair to call out Ted de Corsia, but *Man With The Gun*'s few shortcomings lie with its villains, and unfortunately, he lacks any real villainous menace. The score from Alex North is exceptionally complex (fans of *Spartacus* will definitely notice it), and the cinematography by Lee Garmes is very impressive considering most of the movie was filmed on a studio lot. Directed and co-written by first-time director Richard Wilson, *Man With The Gun* doesn’t offer many surprises for those familiar with the genre, but it's dark, violent, and above all else, highly entertaining. 7.5/10
