I’ve encountered numerous films depicting futuristic scenarios where robots and machines seize control, but I hadn't previously seen one addressing the reality of how technology has already permeated our lives today. I am referring to things like smartphones and other "smart" devices, which now occupy a significant portion of our waking—and even sleeping—hours. Unlike typical science fiction portrayals, these technologies don’t take on human forms or attempt to harm us; they are ubiquitous, integrated into everything we do, and constantly offering assistance. This makes it difficult to simply disconnect from them or discard them, and even if that were possible, most people wouldn't want to. Or at least, it would be unwise to destroy them, as doing so would sever our connections to family, friends, news sources, financial accounts, entertainment options, educational resources, employment opportunities—essentially, a disconnection from the rest of humanity. The Covid-19 lockdowns highlighted this dependence, but they also intensified an existing cultural trend toward reliance on these devices. It’s a relationship that isn't easily abandoned. A rebellion against it is necessary, yet because it’s so deeply ingrained in our culture, challenging the technology can feel like rebelling against humanity itself and natural human inclinations. And most of us aren’t revolutionaries by nature; it’s far easier to accept the status quo and allow phones—and the corporations and governments that control them—to guide our lives. These reflections served as the impetus for creating MAN VS PHONE. But could a film centered on someone's evolving relationship with their phone actually be engaging? The answer is yes, it absolutely could. HER demonstrated this possibility. However, HER involves other characters and various locations, which I couldn’t afford to replicate. Therefore, I looked at LOCKE and BURIED; they showed that an entertaining feature film can be made using only one person in a single location speaking on the phone. And of course, decades earlier, a lengthy segment within 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY proved that you could tell a compelling story with just one individual interacting with an artificial intelligence represented solely by a camera lens. These examples convinced me that I could realize my vision without needing funding for locations or a traditional cast and crew. Consequently, aside from a brief voiceover sequence, I served as the sole cast and crew member. It may seem outlandish, because it is rather unusual. Nevertheless, I accomplished it. The film was recognized with the Best Writer, Feature Film award at the 2024 North Idaho Film Festival (noidff.com).
