It’s interesting how good things can come from unexpected places. Another really great Simon Pegg movie. I’ve managed to see four of his films in just a month, and I've enjoyed them all—‘Hector and the Search for Happiness’ was definitely my favorite among them. This is a romantic comedy that unfolds over the course of a single evening. It centers on blind dating; a guy meets a girl, they spend some time getting to know each other by sharing details, and then things sour between them. So it's using an old theme, but it’s been handled very well. When you see the poster, the tagline tells you what the movie is about, which is what I was hoping for. I had ‘Date Night’ in mind, and thought this might be a British spin on that idea. To be honest, I wasn't expecting anything particularly special—just a regular comedy, maybe even a bit rough around the edges. And it does feel like that at first, but about thirty minutes in, everything changes. The narration quickly shifts into a really enjoyable and upbeat experience for the remaining hour. I think Simon Pegg is now my favorite British actor, for reasons I mentioned earlier. Lake Bell, who recently directed her own film, was excellent playing a character who’s 34 years old. Together they were fantastic; one of the best on-screen couples with a real spark between them. It's about two middle-aged people whose lives have been disrupted by certain events. They meet accidentally and connect well. Once the truth comes out, they push each other away, but they share something in common that puts them to the test as they try to correct their mistakes. > "After this shot I will stronger, > wiser and finally moving on." Everyone eventually reaches their thirties or forties (or already has), like the couple in this film. Life isn't always going to be the same for everyone, but it’s relatable because that’s what shapes our experiences. Even though there's a romantic crisis involving middle-aged people, many of the lines are brilliantly written and genuinely funny. A few moments really got to me, and I couldn’t dismiss them as just fluff. It’s easy enough to start a story—like standing in an open field and deciding which direction to go in any possible angle. But development is key in filmmaking, and this film excels at it. The real challenge lies in how to end the movie, and once again, they delivered a beautiful conclusion, even though I knew it was pretty predictable for a romantic comedy. It has an overall fairy-tale feel, which is appealing if you like touching love stories. It’s definitely a good film from the director of ‘The Inbetweeners,’ and I'll recommend it to those who enjoyed similar movies. But just remember that it’s more cinematically entertaining than realistic. 7½/10
