James Wan has delivered another strong story launching a potential new series, and it’s a noteworthy achievement from a director of his stature. The film presents a thematically layered and initially puzzling storyline crafted by Akela Cooper, who makes her entrance into feature writing with this project. Wan draws inspiration from the giallo style. Annabelle Wallis gives a captivating performance as the central character, and the bold, though somewhat overt in its explanations, events of the final third significantly elevate what was otherwise a fairly standard and unremarkable beginning. Though the striking action set pieces are visually impressive, Joseph Bishara’s musical score incorporates some choices that may not resonate with all audiences. As far as horror goes, I wholeheartedly suggest checking this one out. Rating: B+
