I wasn't certain about the premise of this film initially, but after seeing it, I can definitely say that I enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s essentially a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, told from the viewpoint of the so-called wicked fairy—who isn’t truly evil, as it turns out. In my view, the central idea was surprisingly effective. The narrative has been significantly altered compared to the traditional Sleeping Beauty tale. Whether that's positive or negative is likely a matter of individual taste. I believe it’s beneficial because it allows the film to stand on its own and not rely too heavily on the source material. It resonated with me, as the original story isn’t particularly prominent; therefore, you aren’t frequently bothered by deviations from what's expected, since the movie made it clear early on that it would be quite different. The visuals are lovely, possessing a classic fairy-tale aesthetic while also incorporating moments of darkness and foreboding when necessary. There's naturally a good amount of CGI, which I thought was executed very well. Angelina Jolie delivered a strong performance as Maleficent. However, I wasn’t as impressed with the three fairies tasked with looking after the princess; they attempted to be humorous, but it didn’t consistently land. Overall, I considered this to be a truly enjoyable film—the kids did too. In fact, when we watched it together, they had already seen it twice.
