To be straightforward, this film didn’t quite live up to expectations. The premise had some appeal because it centered on only two characters. While John David Washington, Denzel Washington’s son, and Zendaya both deliver strong performances, they don't achieve a truly memorable impact. Washington portrays Malcolm, an actor who has just released a film. During the premiere, he overlooks thanking Marie in his speech. Zendaya embodies Marie, a woman grappling with her own issues, and she serves as the inspiration for the protagonist in Malcolm’s movie. After the premiere party, the pair returns home at one in the morning and immediately begin to quarrel. It's clear from early on that Marie is upset about something. She prepares macaroni and cheese, and the film offers a worthwhile moment just to witness Malcolm's destruction of it during an argument with Marie. It’s then revealed that Malcolm failed to acknowledge Marie in his speech, which leads to further arguments—arguments that are quite intense. Following this, a review from a writer at the Los Angeles Times surfaces online, triggering yet another disagreement. The shifts between harsh insults and tender moments became repetitive, but that's essentially what the film is about. Again, the acting was commendable, but the plot could have benefited from some refinement. I simply don’t think this movie will appeal to many viewers.
