It's remarkable; each shot genuinely resembles a painting in its beauty. Magellan stands out as an exceptional historical biopic. The movie was filmed using only still shots, with very little music, creating a peaceful and understated atmosphere, and the photography is strikingly lovely and calming to observe. Lav Diaz also fearlessly depicts colonialism’s darker aspects and the dishonesty of European explorers from earlier times; I believe (though I might be mistaken) that the film received funding from Portugal and Spain, yet he manages to convey all of this with incredible artistry. This isn't simply a retelling of historical events; it functions as an important cautionary tale, illustrating how European explorers formerly inflicted suffering, colonized territories, stole resources, and manipulated countries in Southeast Asia against one another. The film offers us a silent perspective on the ways that brutality and avarice can undermine established values and ethical principles.
