Brent Marchant on Magazine Dreams

7/10 · Mar 26, 2025

The subject of toxic masculinity has been explored across various platforms recently, and now writer-director Elijah Bynum brings it to the screen with this film (though its release was initially uncertain). This character study centers on amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox, portrayed by Jonathan Majors, a dedicated competitor striving for recognition in his field and dreaming of appearing in bodybuilding magazines. Despite his efforts, he consistently falls short of his goals, which leads to considerable personal frustration, especially when he feels his physique is unfairly criticized. He becomes consumed with identifying the reasons behind his shortcomings, both physically and in his relationships. This often results in angry reactions, overreactions to situations, and periods of intense self-criticism. To try and improve things, he searches online for ways to gain acceptance and leave a lasting impression, actions that fuel his inner struggles and contribute to a downward spiral affecting his health, self-esteem, and sense of reality—all of which highlight the toxic masculinity within him. His lack of satisfaction, combined with his considerable strength, creates a potentially dangerous combination, raising concerns about whether he can maintain control. While the film occasionally tries to cover too much ground and includes some plot points that seem unrealistic, it nonetheless provides valuable insights into the origins and nature of this behavior, as well as offering a glimmer of hope for redemption. The story also draws parallels with other films depicting troubled individuals similar to Killian, particularly those by Paul Schrader, such as “Taxi Driver” (1976) and "First Reformed" (2017). I was surprised that the film actually reached theaters. Initially slated for release during the 2023 awards season, it was pulled from its distributor's schedule due to serious allegations of abusive behavior against Majors, which led to legal proceedings. This once-promising star quickly became a controversial figure in Hollywood, and the film seemed destined to disappear without ever being seen. However, it has since found a new distributor and is now playing widely. It’s unfortunate that Majors' career has taken such a downturn because his performance here is remarkable and would likely have garnered him awards recognition. This release serves as a warning about the dangers and consequences of toxic masculinity. Understandably, some viewers might want to avoid this film given the controversies surrounding its star. However, if we hope to understand what motivates this kind of behavior, it’s important to examine it closely so that we can identify how it arises, find ways to address it, and prevent further harm to victims—and those who become vulnerable to it.
