Everyone experiences moments of disorientation. Though released direct-to-video, this film possesses qualities that make it worthwhile as a scary movie. The story centers on Joshua Leonard portraying a psychiatric intern who begins work at Cunningham Hall Mental Facility and soon realizes things aren't straightforward. The premise—a mental institution concealing something malevolent, whether supernatural or human in nature—isn’t groundbreaking, but director and co-writer William Butler demonstrates skill in creating a disturbing mood, and he doesn’t hold back on the startling visuals and frightening moments. The asylum itself is appropriately bleak, visually cold, and populated by a collection of troubled individuals. The basement ward exists as well, where those with severe conditions are confined to cells, resembling something from Hell. Jordan Ladd appears for visual appeal and to provide a romantic subplot, while Lance Henriksen lends his horror presence to the role of Cunningham Hall’s Governor. The acting and construction are solid; the script contains killings, dangers lurking in dark hallways, concealed truths, and an unexpected plot development. It doesn't attempt anything innovative, so those seeking something new will be let down. Nevertheless, it is sufficiently atmospheric and unsettling for a viewing experience in dim lighting. 6/10
