I decided to see _Madeline’s Madeline_ after having enjoyed Josephine Decker’s film _Shirley_. This movie tackles quite a few themes—race, mental health struggles, growing up, conflicts between mothers and daughters, and also incorporates a self-aware theatrical element—and while it's admirable in its scope, I often got the sense that it was pushing too hard to convey significance. However, Helena Howard is truly remarkable. It’s an outstanding performance, very genuine and powerful; she manages to keep everything from falling apart. Miranda July seemed somewhat limited by the filmmaking approach, feeling restricted in a movie that promotes improvisation and emotional freedom, which are usually her strengths but aren't allowed here. The film has plenty of concepts to explore, and it’s certainly engaging. Ultimately, I appreciated its aspirations more than I enjoyed experiencing it.
