I’m not sure this worked for me because regardless of how innovative the underlying idea seemed to be – or ideas within that idea – I simply didn’t feel invested in the central character, Helena Howard. Things got off to an uneasy start with the line "you are not a cat, you are inside a cat" - it wasn't something I wanted to picture at all. She portrays someone striving for an acting career and willing to work hard to achieve it, which is challenging enough given the mix of personalities and goals around her that seem as likely to hinder her progress as support it. To be fair to Howard, there’s a genuineness to her portrayal; she comes across as a young woman attempting to navigate both her personal life and professional aspirations, and the camerawork intentionally feels disconnected, lending an air of spontaneity to the unfolding narrative. It isn't that it lacks conventional form, but in its determination to avoid conformity, it didn’t really give any indication of what it was trying to be or who it was intended for. The film is unconventional and occasionally has interesting moments, but ultimately fails to provide anything for viewers to connect with. I wasn't engaged, and I questioned whether I should have been. It’s probably worth seeing; it’s unusual and different – but perhaps a bit too focused on itself.
