It’s fascinating to see this examination of how regular women fought for equal acknowledgment and wages for their abilities during the 1960s in Britain. The story unfolds against a time of economic difficulty; Sally Hawkins and Geraldine James head up a dependable group of British actors who try to convince Ford Motor Company to compensate them appropriately. Despite having a Labour government and Barbara Castle (played by Miranda Richardson) as Employment & Productivity Secretary under Harold Wilson, along with early support from labor unions, this turned out to be a very significant undertaking that brought difficulties for everyone involved, both at their jobs and in their personal lives. There are moments of humor interspersed throughout, but it’s ultimately a moving depiction of the struggles—often between people who seem like they should be allies—and even among some male workers who didn't think women deserved equal pay. Bob Hoskins delivers a solid performance as the playful shop steward who urges the women to maintain their challenge against powerful forces, with Richard Schiff also doing well as the American Ford manager sent over to try and stop everything. It’s presented in a somewhat straightforward way, but it’s definitely worth seeing.
