It’s hard to claim Madame Web holds the title of absolute worst superhero film ever; older movies like Superman IV, Batman & Robin, and Supergirl would likely contend for that distinction. However, a case could certainly be made that it's the most disappointing entry in recent years of superhero cinema. I personally found it somewhat preferable to Suicide Squad, though even that movie featured characters in costumes, unlike Madame Web, which only showed the women in their outfits for a handful of minutes—and those appearances were through visions of the future. Unfortunately, very little about this film succeeds. The direction, despite attempts at dynamic camera work, felt unoriginal and commonplace. The acting ranged from unremarkable, particularly Dakota Johnson’s performance, to truly poor (Tahar Rahim), which was exacerbated by dialogue that felt awkward and frequently terrible—the product of four writers, two of whom also worked on Morbius. My reaction wasn't so much dislike as profound boredom; it simply failed to engage me. There’s no compelling reason to see this movie, and the disastrous box office results make the final line – "And you know the best thing about the future? It hasn't happened yet" – feel particularly meaningful. 2.0/5
