Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon, following their collaboration on “Mrs Miniver,” appear together in a dramatic story centered on the French researchers dedicated to isolating radium. The impetus for this undertaking arose when a friend informed them that a particular rock possessed the unusual property of emitting light. Recognizing it wasn't one of the known elements, Pierre Curie and his colleague—and future wife—Marie began investigating. Their work proved difficult, lacking support from their colleagues, and concerns grew as Mme. Curie experienced health problems potentially linked to cancer, leading them to contemplate giving up. However, they reasoned that if this substance could harm healthy cells, perhaps it might also be effective against harmful ones. The film that follows can be challenging due to the powerful depiction of their arduous efforts and sacrifices, which occur in basic conditions within a makeshift laboratory. There’s a noticeable connection between Garson and Pidgeon; the film's visual design feels authentic, and it touches on themes of prejudice against women and resistance from established institutions. It may stretch plausibility at times, but ultimately provides an enjoyable experience.
