It’s unusual to see these kinds of bleak futures set outside of America, which makes it noteworthy that this one takes place across the vast Australian desert, introducing us to a young police officer called "Max" (Mel Gibson). His work is particularly unrewarding – and dangerous. He has to watch over the isolated areas attempting to safeguard what remains of society from groups of bikers who are always looking for fuel—both for themselves and their vehicles. The situation escalates when a merciless biker known as "Toe-cutter" (Hugh Keays-Byrne) retaliates for his leader's death by killing everyone he can get to – including the wife and son of the now enraged “Max.” What follows is a raw, fast-moving story centered on violence and retribution, with the former lawman discarding any sense of morality he previously held and completely dedicating himself to eliminating his foe. This film will likely be more significant for what it led to than for its own merits. The performances are generally uninspired, as is the writing, and I found that the relentless brutality eventually began to feel less impactful and almost humorous. It’s undeniably a ninety-minute piece of cinematic history, but it's not particularly well made.
