This movie, a low-budget production, has become an important film within its genre. The story unfolds in a future setting where highways are controlled by violent gangs driving customized cars and menacing bikers seemingly straight out of nightmares. An overwhelmed police department attempts to maintain order using high-speed vehicles. Max Rockatansky is a decent officer attempting to cope with the escalating disorder around him. Following the death of his closest friend, he contemplates leaving the force, but a disastrous event during a family vacation transforms him into an unrelenting agent of vengeance. Considering this film, it’s important to acknowledge just how skillfully director George Miller managed to create something special despite having very limited resources; in fact, Miller even edited the movie from his bedroom to highlight its rough-and-ready feel. The costumes are outstanding, the acting is superb—Mel Gibson as Max stands out particularly well—and the antagonists embody true villainy. However, it’s the stunts and chase scenes that make watching this film a satisfying experience. Even just the first ten minutes alone are an adrenaline rush of pure brilliance, but throughout the whole movie provides a relentless impact that has frequently been copied since its release, though seldom as effectively. While fundamentally a tale of revenge, it immediately engages you and carries you through to a powerful ending; I’d give it 8/10. Note for Region 2 viewers: The inexpensive Mad Max Trilogy set still includes the ridiculously dubbed version of this film—a remarkably misguided decision by the American distributors.
