It's good that the initial movie laid the groundwork for the protagonist, because this installment moves along at a much brisker pace. "Max" (Mel Gibson) is now living as a wanderer. He still possesses some level of morality, relatively speaking, while making his way across the Australian outback in an attempt to survive and find sustenance. During his travels, he crosses paths with the eccentric “Gyro Captain” (Bruce Spence), but the action really kicks into high gear when he discovers an oil facility under attack. He consents to assist them in defending themselves against the threatening, masked "Humungus" (Kjell Nilsson) and his equally intimidating companion "Wez" (Vernon Wells), who shares a peculiar bond with his fair-haired acquaintance. These criminals are brutal, savage, and set on taking control of this vital resource; therefore, "Max" suggests to his companions a simple exchange – in return for enough gasoline, he’ll provide them with a large truck they can use to reach the coast and safety. What ensues is a succession of rapidly unfolding, dangerous adventures that build up to an exciting pursuit involving what appeared to be the front section of a snowplough (in the desert?) playing a key part as they attempt to escape. Emil Minty delivers a solid performance as the appropriately named "Feral Kid," and once we understand why Spence earned his nickname, the entire sequence becomes quite literally airborne. This film surpasses its predecessor in almost every way. The narrative is considerably more developed, featuring ample amounts of violence, but also incorporating some dark comedy, and Gibson demonstrates considerable charm as his character evolves. Director George Miller seems to be offering a valuable insight for other filmmakers, too – ninety minutes proves to be the ideal length to include plenty of action while maintaining audience engagement.
