I frequently felt I was trying to force myself to laugh while watching "Mad Heidi," a poorly conceived, one-joke, crowd funded movie from directors Johannes Hartmann and Sandro Klopfstein. Described as a Swissploitation action/horror comedy, I really hoped this film would be amusing, but it simply wasn't successful in that regard. This is an instance where the initial idea is much better than what was ultimately produced—a regrettable example of a movie trying too hard to be clever (and missing the mark). The story takes place in a dystopian Switzerland, where Heidi (Alice Lucy) and her grandfather live a quiet existence in the Alps. Their once-beautiful country has come under the oppressive rule of an evil cheese dictator, Our Very Swiss Leader (Casper Van Dien), who intends to conquer the world through dairy products. After Heidi’s boyfriend, a goat herder (Kel Matsena), is brutally killed by the government for distributing illegal cheese, she embarks on a quest for revenge in honor of her lost love. Along the way, she'll have to battle super soldiers, prison inmates, ninja nuns, deadly henchmen, and overcome other bizarre challenges as she fights to restore freedom to her nation. The concept sounds like a potentially hilarious midnight movie experience, and it does hold that promise. However, this action-adventure narrative is overly strange, campy, and foolish—and not in an enjoyable way. The material isn't sufficient for a full-length film (the original idea was likely something along the lines of “let’s see all the crazy things we can do with cheese, like torturing people with fondue”), which makes the entire project feel desperate. There are unsuccessful nods to everything from Tarantino films to exploitation movies from the 70s and 80s. The film shares superficial similarities with "Sisu" and "Kill Bill," but it's bogged down by unfunny jokes revolving around cheese. The humor is absent, and I found very little to laugh at in this movie. It’s not silly or witty enough to stand out, and the four writers (Klopfstein and Hartmann, along with Gregory D. Widmer and Trent Haaga) produced a screenplay that feels disconnected. The writing and dialogue—and I won't sugarcoat it because there's no point—is truly awful. The film’s retro aesthetic does achieve some limited success, as do the practical gore effects. It is bloody and violent with inventive deaths, but viewers are forced to endure a slow and laborious first half before the entertaining parts (namely, the revenge-fueled action) begin. This is a movie you'll likely never want to see again, which greatly reduces its chances of ever becoming the cult classic it so desperately desires to be. Films should start with a strong foundation and build from there, but "Mad Heidi" appears to work backward by constructing a flimsy story around a final gag. Consequently, this second-rate film feels like nothing more than an unfunny, tired gimmick.
