Seriously. What on earth did I just witness? And who is Phil Tippett? Please, Phil, give us more, please. I didn’t really grasp what was happening during this chaotic experience, so how could I possibly award it a perfect score? Well, I reserve tens for films that feel completely unchangeable; not necessarily the best movies ever made, but ones that seem to perfectly accomplish their aims. Other examples include Aliens, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and something closer in style to this one, Lost Highway. I can totally understand why some people would dislike this movie—my mother and sister certainly would. But if you believe ugliness can be beautiful, and that strange, grotesque, and confusing themes can be exciting, then I strongly suggest you watch this film or whatever it is. It's like what Laika Studios would produce if they were under the control of the devil and Cronenberg, Lynch, and a possessed Terry Gilliam handled production. If this wasn’t almost entirely stop-motion animation, it would be nearly unwatchable even for fans of extreme gore. It’s a constant barrage of grotesque violence and destruction, occasionally broken up by moments of peace and beauty—and those moments are all the more appreciated after enduring so much despair and suffering. While that does make it feel longer than its 80-minute length, far longer, it's not just because of the emotional weight it places on you. It’s also incredibly dense and detailed. Look away for a second or two and you miss something important. Don't look away, and you won't understand what's going on, but the level of detail, imagery, and plot keeps your brain working at full capacity. It's draining, but it's worth it. It evokes memories of every great film and piece of art ever made by David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, and David Cronenberg. Of Flåklypa Grand Prix and Coraline. Of that Stinkfist video by Tool. Of Fincher’s work for Aphex Twin and Björk. Of Dante's Inferno—at least I think so; I haven’t actually read it. Of Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey. It's insane, and brilliant. Beautifully insane. Ugly yet beautiful. Incomprehensible and captivating simultaneously. If it’s pretentious, I don’t care, given the obvious effort that went into this. Few people put in this much work, knowing they’ll likely barely break even financially if they truly believe in what they're doing. I've become increasingly pessimistic about cinema recently. So when something like this arrives, it thrills me deeply. Please support this director and his team so we can have more of this kind of creativity. This work feels both familiar and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I will watch it again multiple times, and I encourage you to do the same. Wow.
