The stop-motion animation is truly remarkable; seeing it on a large screen reveals an incredible level of detail in both the characters and their surroundings. The way light and shadow are used contributes significantly to its visual appeal – it’s genuinely impressive artistry. While the narrative takes a backseat, it follows a figure wearing a gas mask who descends into a ruined world filled with disturbing creatures and constant threats as they make their way through this dangerous place toward a central tower, which likely holds the source of all the suffering. As events unfold, it becomes clear that the focus isn't so much on the bleakness of the setting but rather on whatever exists within that tower and seems to benefit from the surrounding despair. There are moments of darkly humorous brutality – things get crushed in a way that’s not frightening, but unexpectedly amusing, as the journey continues through this industrial wasteland. I think it really deserves to be seen in theaters; much of the intricate craftsmanship would likely be lost on a smaller television screen. The film has a unique and persistent style that caught me off guard, and overall, I found it quite enjoyable.
