This play feels stretched thin when confined to two hours. As with many of Shakespeare’s tragedies, the language possesses great depth, the narrative unfolds deliberately, the characters have layers, and there's a wealth of imagery. While adapting for the screen can lessen the reliance on extensive descriptive passages, it still requires time for the machinations, threat, and desire for control to fully emerge. This isn’t a bad adaptation, though. Michael Fassbender delivers an adequate performance as the driven Thane of Glamis. He learns from three witches that he will become King Duncan, and alongside his equally resolute wife (Marion Cotillard), he begins working toward that outcome. However, not everyone is convinced by his act of innocence, which forces him to eliminate those who stand in his way—including Banquo (Paddy Considine) and Malcolm (Jack Raynor, whose casting feels a bit strange), and it's then that their careful scheme starts to fall apart. The film itself is visually appealing, the music creates an unsettling atmosphere, and the costumes, set design, and lighting effectively evoke the feel of Scotland; but once more, omitting key plot elements—such as the details surrounding the witches’ initial prediction—diminishes much of the story's intricate strength. Lady Macbeth’s role feels diminished, and she doesn’t fully explain her husband's actions, leaving us with a fairly simple tale of murderous ambition. It’s acceptable to watch, but ultimately it fails to impress.
