This is fantastic! The performances in *Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom* are remarkable, especially those of Viola Davis as Ma and Chadwick Boseman as Levee. The characters have imperfections, but Davis and Boseman portray them both in a captivating way; Boseman has a particular moment that completely takes over the film. They clearly commit themselves fully to their roles. The supporting actors, with Colman Domingo as Cutler leading the charge, are also very good. The story is gripping and exceptionally well-presented, benefiting from its pacing and length—a movie lasting 2 hours would have felt slow. The final scene is particularly memorable too. There’s much to appreciate in this film, even considering the sadness and unfairness that permeate the narrative. I definitely suggest seeing it.
