Magda, played by Penélope Cruz, finds herself navigating life as a separated mother of her son Dani, recently unemployed and struggling with parenting duties. Her situation takes an unexpected turn when she receives a diagnosis of breast cancer, drastically altering her reality. A chance encounter with Arturo, portrayed by Luis Tosar, at one of her son’s football games leads to an unlikely connection; he's not only a scout but also dealing with his own health challenges related to cancer. As they get closer, Magda undergoes a mastectomy, but despite the doctor’s efforts—played by Asier Etxeandia—the illness spreads. Just as they rejoice over her pregnancy news, they are confronted with a difficult prognosis that everyone involved must accept. The film's later sections truly showcase Cruz’s range and emotional depth. She embodies a woman who is committed to ensuring her son experiences a loving and secure family environment, determined he won’t feel resentment towards the impending new baby, and manages this delicate balance without resorting to excessive sentimentality. Teo Planell also gives a noteworthy performance, and director Julio Medem avoids sensationalizing the story, instead allowing the three actors to portray it with a poignant touch, occasionally incorporating moments of gentle humor. While films addressing similar themes have appeared before, there's something genuine and affecting about this one that makes it worthwhile seeing.
