After an accident involving a snow truck leaves her without parents, "Cady" (Violet McGraw) goes to live with her aunt "Gemma" (Alison Williams). Their initial relationship isn't exactly smooth sailing. Gemma prioritizes her career at a toy company that focuses on AI-powered gadgets, and she’s concerned because the business is losing ground – much to the frustration of her boss, “David” (Ronny Chiang). The kids they're trying to reach are becoming more demanding and less engaged! However, Gemma has an idea. Along with coworkers "Cole" (Brian Jordan Alvarez) and "Tess" (Jen Van Epps), she’s developing what she hopes will be the perfect companion: a doll designed to bond closely with its owner, almost like a sibling. The problem is that the story feels very familiar; I didn't think the acting was particularly strong, and I certainly wasn't frightened by the supposedly terrifying doll – in fact, there were moments when it seemed genuinely helpful, like dealing with the neighbor’s dog. It’s put together reasonably well as a drama, but for me, it felt too impersonal and formulaic. The film does offer a cautionary message to parents who might be tempted to let their children depend on artificial relationships, and once that point is established – and repeated – the rest of the movie just seemed rather ordinary.
