It feels like only recently we were introduced to M3GAN—perhaps she should have had an ‘h’ in her name? It's possible another robotic figure comes to mind. Regardless, this installment finds “Gemma” (Allison Williams) and her friends dealing with financial difficulties while a new artificial intelligence creation from the United States, "Amelia" (Ivanna Sakhno), spirals out of control. Before long, thanks to the involvement of the tech mogul "Alt" (Jermaine Clement), she's drawn into a project she’d previously refused, under threat of harm to her young relative “Cady” (Violet McGraw). Fortunately, she has the support of “Christian” (Aristotle Athari) and access to equipment capable of constructing something as complex as a space shuttle. As viewers, we anticipate that this is all part of a scheme by the robotic entity to return and wreak chaos, and so the story follows a familiar path. It's not significantly worse than the initial film; there are some clever lines scattered throughout the extensive conversations, and moments of humor arise from the destruction of furniture and the dismemberment of objects with the same precision as an action movie like “John Wick.” The performances aren’t particularly strong, but I did appreciate the brutal chaos of the final scenes, even though they're almost overwhelmed by a cloying sweetness and sentimentality. By the end, I was taken aback that it didn’t leave me feeling entirely negative. I'd love to have one of those robotic creatures to pair with my remote-controlled Dalek.
