Javier Bardem is undeniably the highlight, seeming to relish his role in what is otherwise a fairly predictable adventure story. He portrays "Hector," a magician whose career has fallen on hard times. During a visit to an animal store, he meets the character known as Lyle and realizes that he can sing. An opportunity for financial gain presents itself, and Hector invests everything he owns; however, Lyle suffers from stage fright and refuses to perform! Consequently, our performer faces disaster and leaves his house in the care of the Primm family. Shortly after they settle in, their son, "Josh" (Winslow Fegley delivers a solid performance), hears sounds coming from the attic, launching them into a more conventional sequence of events featuring songs, exaggerated humor from his parents who appear somewhat taken aback, involvement from city officials, and a softly agreeable ending that manages to draw out just a slight emotional response. Shawn Mendes ("Lyle") possesses a voice I find immediately unremarkable, and the songwriting team behind "Dear Evan Hansen," Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, don’t provide many moments that inspire much enthusiasm beyond perhaps “Top of the World.” The plot bears a strong resemblance to "Clifford the Big Red Dog" (2021), with a youngster and an unusual pet experiencing enjoyable adventures and setbacks. As a mild form of entertainment, it succeeds adequately; however, it’s not something I anticipate recalling having seen.
